DocuSign vs Dropbox Sign (formerly HelloSign)

By the time a team compares DocuSign with Dropbox Sign, it has usually decided it needs e-signatures. The open question is how much platform it wants to pay for. Dropbox Sign keeps signing simple and does not cap signature requests on paid plans. DocuSign costs more per seat and counts envelopes, but brings far more integrations and controls.

Is Dropbox Sign enough, or do you need DocuSign?

Pick Dropbox Sign if a small team sends routine agreements, already keeps files in Dropbox, and wants unlimited signature requests at a lower seat price. Pick DocuSign if you need payment collection, a deep integration catalog, enterprise administration, or EU qualified signatures without buying an API add-on. Consider TurboDocx if the slow part is building the document rather than signing it: it fills Word templates from Salesforce, HubSpot, ConnectWise or Wrike data and sends them for signature, with a free plan of 5 signature documents a month.

Where each one wins

Where Dropbox Sign wins

Simplicity and volume. Paid plans do not cap signature requests, the sending flow is short, and a team that already stores contracts in Dropbox can send them without leaving it. The limits show up in templates (5 on Essentials) and in the Salesforce add-on cost on Standard.

Where DocuSign wins

Everything around the signature: payments, web forms and signer attachments on Business Pro, a catalog of more than a thousand integrations, and advanced and qualified eIDAS signatures on its Enhanced plan without a separate API purchase. For a regulated or multinational team that breadth is usually the reason to pay more.

Where TurboDocx wins, and where it does not

TurboDocx is the better fit when someone spends time assembling each contract before it goes out. It builds the document from your own template and CRM, PSA or project data, then sends it for signature, and the API comes with every plan. It has no native Dropbox integration, no payment collection and far fewer integrations than DocuSign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dropbox Sign the same as HelloSign?

Yes. Dropbox Sign is the current name of the product formerly called HelloSign. Its developer documentation still lives at developers.hellosign.com, and some Dropbox Sign pages still use the HelloSign name.

Is Dropbox Sign cheaper than DocuSign?

Yes, at list price. Dropbox Sign Essentials is $15 per month for one user and Standard is $25 per user per month, both billed yearly ($20 and $30 billed monthly), and neither caps signature requests. DocuSign Standard is $30 per user per month on an annual commitment (billed monthly), with 100 envelopes per user per year. The gap grows with volume, since Dropbox Sign does not count signature requests on paid plans.

Does Dropbox Sign have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan allows 3 signature requests per month, renewing every 30 days, and signing your own documents does not count against it. DocuSign has no free plan. TurboDocx has a free plan with 5 signature documents per month and API keys.

Which one is better for embedded signing in our own app?

Both sell the API separately from the app. DocuSign lists embedded signing only on its Enhanced developer plans, while Dropbox Sign sells API plans from $900 a year. Our e-signature API comparison covers this question in detail, including TurboDocx, whose API keys come with every plan.
