How to design your signature

Type your full name, or just your initials, in the box above. Each style card shows your name in a different script font, so you can compare them side by side instead of guessing. Click the one you like and the preview updates.

Then fine-tune it. Pick an ink color, raise the size until the letters have room to breathe, and add a little slant if you want the signature to lean forward like fast handwriting. Around 10 to 15 degrees looks natural for most fonts. When you are happy with it, click Download PNG to save it with a transparent background.

Signature ideas: matching the style to the job

A signature on a lease, an employment contract or a client proposal does not need to be beautiful. It needs to look deliberate and stay legible when it is printed small. Great Vibes, Allura and Alex Brush have long, looping capitals that read as formal. Dancing Script and Sacramento are lighter and easier to read at a glance.

For something that looks like real pen on paper, try Caveat or Homemade Apple. They have the uneven rhythm of everyday handwriting, which suits personal letters, creative work and email sign-offs. Mr Dafoe sits in between: quick, slanted strokes that look like someone who signs a lot of documents.

Short names have more room for flourish. If your name is long, try signing with your first initial and full last name, or your initials alone, and see which version still looks like you at a small size. Some people use a typed style as a model and practice writing it by hand until the paper version matches.

Ink color, size and slant

Black and blue are the everyday choices: they stay readable on white paper, on screen and in a scan. Navy is a quieter blue that pairs well with formal fonts. Burgundy is the one to choose when you want the signature to stand out, for example on a thank-you note or a piece of artwork.

Size and slant change the personality more than people expect. A larger, upright signature looks steady and careful. A smaller signature with a forward lean looks quick and practiced. The PNG is drawn at twice the on-screen resolution, so it stays sharp when you shrink it onto a signature line.

From signature design to a signed document

Insert the PNG into Word with Insert, then Pictures, or place it on a PDF with any editor that can add an image. If you would rather not choose a style at all, the free signature maker gives you a plain draw or type pad. To sign by hand with more room, use the hand-drawn signature pad. Already signed on paper? You can convert a photo of your paper signature into a transparent PNG instead.

In the United States, the ESIGN Act (15 U.S.C. 7001(a)) says a signature may not be denied legal effect solely because it is in electronic form. The law defines an electronic signature as a sound, symbol or process adopted by a person with the intent to sign (15 U.S.C. 7006(5)), so a typed style can qualify just as a drawn one can. What an image cannot show is who placed it or whether the document changed afterward. For agreements with clients, vendors or employees, send the document through TurboSign: each signer gets a link, and you get the signed PDF back with an audit trail. The free plan includes 5 signature documents a month. See whether electronic signatures are legal for the details by document type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I design my signature online for free?

Type your name, then click through the eight script styles to see it written in each one. Pick an ink color, adjust the size and slant until it looks like you, and click Download PNG. It costs nothing, needs no account and adds no watermark.

Which signature style should I choose?

Start with how you want to come across. Flowing scripts such as Great Vibes or Allura look formal, Caveat and Homemade Apple look like everyday handwriting, and Mr Dafoe reads as quick and confident. Whatever you pick, make sure the first letters of your names are still recognizable at small sizes.

What ink color should a signature be?

Black and blue are the safe choices. Both read clearly on white paper and survive scanning and printing. Navy looks a little more formal than bright blue, and burgundy works for personal notes or creative work where you want the signature to stand out.

Can I draw my signature instead of typing it?

Yes. Switch to the Draw tab and sign with your mouse, trackpad or finger. The ink color and pen width controls apply to your strokes. The font, size and slant controls only change typed signatures.

Is my name or signature uploaded anywhere?

No. The signature is rendered on a canvas in your browser, and the PNG is created on your device. Nothing you type or draw is sent to TurboDocx.

How do I use my signature design on a document?

Download the PNG and insert it like any picture. In Word, use Insert, then Pictures, and set it to In Front of Text. In a PDF editor, add it as an image on the signature line. When other people also need to sign, send the document through TurboSign; the free plan includes 5 signature documents a month.
