How to turn a photo into a digital signature

Sign your name on plain white paper with a dark pen. Take a photo with your phone or scan the page, then upload the image above. The tool reads every pixel, keeps the ink, and makes the paper transparent. It also crops the result tight to your signature so there is no empty margin to trim later.

Move the sensitivity slider until the background is gone and the strokes are still solid. Pick black or blue if you want an even ink color instead of the slightly grey tone most phone photos have. Then click Download transparent PNG.

Why the background matters

A signature photo straight from your camera carries the paper with it: a grey or cream rectangle that covers the signature line and any text around it. With the background removed, the PNG sits on top of a PDF or Word document the way ink would, so the signed page looks like it came off a printer rather than a collage.

Everything runs in your browser. The photo is not uploaded or stored, which matters for an image that is, after all, your signature. If you would rather sign on screen, the free signature maker lets you draw or type one instead.

Using the signature on documents

In Word, click Insert, then Pictures, and set the picture to In Front of Text so you can drag it onto the line. For a PDF, place the image with any PDF editor that can add pictures, or start from our sign PDF online page.

A pasted image is fine for your own copy of a document. When a client or colleague also has to sign, or you need to show who signed and when, send the document through TurboSign. Each signer gets a link, and you get the signed PDF back with an audit trail. The free plan includes 5 signature documents a month. For the legal background, see whether electronic signatures are legal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert an image of my signature into a digital signature?

Sign a sheet of white paper, take a photo or scan it, and upload the image here. The tool removes the paper background, crops to the signature, and lets you download it as a transparent PNG that you can place on PDFs and Word documents.

Is the image to signature converter free?

Yes. Converting and downloading is free with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image is processed in your browser on your own device. It is never sent to TurboDocx or anyone else, and it is gone when you close the page.

How do I get a clean result from a phone photo?

Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, shoot in even daylight without shadows, and fill most of the frame with the signature. If grey patches remain, raise the sensitivity slider. If thin strokes break up, lower it.

Can I use the converted signature to sign documents legally?

A signature image shows your intent to sign, and US and EU law do not reject a signature just because it is electronic. To prove who signed and that the document was not changed, send it through an e-signature platform that keeps an audit trail.
